Janeva Grist, 96

Janeva Kathleen Doornbos Grist was born in El Dorado, Kansas, April 18, 1926. She was the third of four children born to Virgil and Sena Doornbos. She grew up riding a horse to attend a one room schoolhouse called Science Hall. She then attended two years of school in Wichita, and finished her high school education at El Dorado High School.
It was while she was attending high school that Janeva met Walter Grist, who was attending Junior College in the same building. After completing Junior College, Walter joined the Army to serve in World War II. Janeva, at the age of 18, traveled by train to Pennsylvania where they were married on September 19, 1944, at the Army base chapel, before he shipped out to the Aleutian Islands.
After the war, they both went to Friends University to complete their degrees. Janeva was a member and soloist with the Friends University Singing Quakers. They then moved to Dallas, TX, where Walter attended seminary. It was in Texas that their first child was born, Kathleen Annise. During Walter’s church ministry, they lived in Natoma, KS, where Minda Laurene was born; Washington, KS, where Randall Jeffrey was born; and finally, Wichita, KS. At all the churches, Janeva was singing in or directing choirs, leading Bible Studies, helping with children’s ministry, and reaching out to people in need.
In 1968, the family moved to Baltimore, MD, where Walter directed the Koinonia retreat center. In 1970 they moved to Minneapolis, MN, where Walter served with the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association until his retirement. Janeva traveled with him for three assignments, living several months in India, Brazil, and Hungary. In all of those places, Janeva was involved in the ministry, often singing at large meetings. She touched many people and members of her family with her strong Christian faith and relationship with Jesus.
After her love for Jesus, Janeva’s greatest love was for her children and grandchildren. She was a devoted mother and grandmother, demonstrating her love by spending as much time as possible with her family.
Janeva was an accomplished vocalist and played the piano by ear with her own arrangements of many songs. Janeva was an avid flower gardener. In two different years, Janeva won the award for the most beautiful yard in Robbinsdale, MN. All three of her children have followed in her footsteps as musicians and gardeners.
Janeva’s faith, love for family, caring for those in need, love of nature, and sharing her music have influenced all of her family and many people wherever she went. It can truly be said of her, “Well done, good and faithful servant!”
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter R. Grist.
Janeva is survived by her children, Kathleen (Benedict) Schwartz, of Zambia, Minda (Joel) Squadroni, of Buffalo, and Randall Grist, of Brooklyn Center; nine grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson.
Janeva’s funeral service is Friday, June 3, at Zion Lutheran Church, 1200 Highway 25 S., Buffalo, MN. Visitation is at 10 a.m. and the funeral service at 11 a.m. Lunch will be served at the church following the service. Interment at Glen Haven Memorial Gardens, 5125 West Broadway in Crystal, MN.

Timothy Lee, 45
Timothy Matthias Lee, of Snoqualmie Pass, Washington, died on Monday, May 23, 2022. He was 45 years old.
Tim was born March 27, 1977, in Massena, New York, the son of Alan and Marianna Lee. He spent most of his childhood in Buffalo, MN.
He served in the Air National Guard from 1998 to 2004. After 9/11, he was placed on active duty in the U.S. Air Force in Operation Noble Eagle. His final rank was Senior Airman.
He graduated from Minnesota West Community and Technical College in Canby, MN, with an associate degree of applied science in electrical technology. He also graduated from Northland Pioneer College in Winslow, AZ, with an associate degree in nursing. He served as a registered nurse in the state of Washington.
Tim lived a quiet and humble life with great convictions, and a grand sense of adventure. He had a generous heart, and was a very easy person to love and appreciate. He found great joy in raising his family and seeing them develop skills in activities they pursued together. Skiing was a most notable pastime he taught his children and enjoyed.
Tim was not just an avid outdoorsman, it was the fabric of who he was. Notable accomplishments included wintering over in Antarctica as an electrician and EMS personnel. He built his own dory that he took down the Grand Canyon on multiple trips. He also spent several seasons as a commercial halibut and salmon fisherman, set netting in the Prince William Sound.
He was a devoted father and sacrificed much to teach, nurture, and raise his family. This was his greatest work, and he will be greatly missed by his children until they are reunited.
Survivors include: his three children, Theo, Talia, and Hugo; his former wife and good friend, Karine Dandurand; his parents, Alan and Marianna; siblings, Jason (Grace) and Rose (Ryan); five nephews and nieces, Elijah, Esme, Merrik, Isla, and Marabelle.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Rachel; grandparents, Edward and Alice Paquin and Harris and Aldora Lee.
A celebration of life will be held on Thursday, June 2, 2022, at 1 p.m. PST at Flintoft’s Issaquah Funeral Home, 540 East Sunset Way, Issaquah, WA 98027. Following the service there will be a gathering for family and friends. Eugene Salonek Sr., 89
Funeral Services for Eugene William Salonek, Sr. was held at 11: 00 a.m. on Friday, May 27, 2022, at Colfax United Methodist Church with Rev. Sharon Stewart officiating. Interment will follow in Colfax Cemetery under the direction of Kramer of Colfax. Visitation was held on Thursday, May 26, 2022, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Kramer of Colfax.
Eugene William Salonek, Sr. passed away on Sunday, May 22, 2022, at his daughter’s home in Houston, where he has lived for the past year.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 60 years, Melba Opal Brown Salonek; his parents, Thomas and Margaret Salonek, of Montrose, MN; his sister, Evelyn Bjork, of Watertown, MN; and his brother, Thomas Leonard Salonek, of Minnesota.
Gene was born in Marysville Township, MN, on July 27, 1932, to Thomas Salonek and Margaret Babatz Salonek, the third of four children. He grew up in Montrose, MN, and graduated from Buffalo High School in Buffalo, MN. He served in the US Air Force in Korea and the Canal Zone, and met the love of his life, Melba, while he was stationed in Alexandria. They eventually moved to West Orange, TX, where they had their family and made their life. Gene spent his entire career employed with Gulf States Utilities / Entergy. Simultaneously, he also served as a Volunteer Firefighter for the West Orange Volunteer Fire Department and was instrumental in raising funds to purchase fire trucks as the Fire Department was being established. Over the course of his 33 years with the Department, he held every position, including Chief multiple times. He received the honorary title of Lifetime Fire Chief upon his retirement. In recognition of his service, March 28, 1987, was deemed Eugene W. Salonek Day by the City of West Orange. A lifetime first responder, he loved nature and enjoyed hunting and most of all fishing. He was a devoted family man and was an active member of the West Orange United Methodist Church, and later the Colfax United Methodist Church.
Those left to cherish his memory include his son, Eugene William Salonek, Jr. and his wife, Carol, of Tomball, TX; his daughter, Vickie Salonek Angenend and her husband, Mike, of Houston, TX; his grandchildren, USMC Major Morgan Salonek and his wife, Audrey, of Fort Worth, TX, Jennifer Angenend McKeon and her husband, John, of Paige, TX, and Christina Angenend, of Austin, TX; and his great-grandchildren, Ella McKeon, Evangeline McKeon, and one great-grandson on the way.
Eugene is also survived by his sister, Gladys Nelson, of Eden Prairie, MN; sisters-in-law, Audrey Ellington, Irma Henry, and Mabel Foster; and his brother-in-law, Dan Brown.
