Bonnie Thompson, 81

Bonnie Kay (Pannhoff) Thompson, long-time resident of Buffalo, passed away on Wednesday, April 6, 2022, at Buffalo Hospital. Bonnie was a resident of Havenwood of Buffalo at the time of her death.

Bonnie was born in Forest City, IA, to William and Kathryn Pannhoff on December 27, 1941. The Pannhoff family moved from Iowa to a farm near Fairhaven, MN, in 1952. Soon after graduation from Annandale High School in 1960, Bonnie met the love of her life, Mert Thompson, Jr.  Bonnie and Mert were married on October 1, 1960, in Annandale, MN. They eventually settled in Buffalo, MN, and had three children - Gunnar, Anna and Kate. Bonnie’s love of reading, nature and being creative made her a magical Mom. Her family and friends were her priority, and she knew just how to make people feel welcome and cared for. Bonnie effortlessly made routine dinners and little life events feel special.

Bonnie loved being part of the Buffalo community and enjoyed long-standing relationships with many friends she made through family, business, and her hobbies. She was passionate about supporting the small businesses in town. Bonnie and Mert owned and operated several businesses in Buffalo throughout the years, including the Buffalo Nickel and Renaissance West. Together, they enjoyed finding homes and furniture that needed TLC and breathing new life into them. Mert would usually take the leap and Bonnie would make sure everything happened to plan (or create one if there wasn’t!).  Bonnie was a voracious reader and was an open-minded person that enjoyed learning and nature.  She liked to travel and took trips with friends across Europe, back and forth to France several times, and family trips to Florida, Mexico and Hawaii. She loved to walk and would walk in every kind of weather - nothing stopped her! Bonnie was also a talented artist and was humbled to find many people wanted her work, especially her cow paintings.

Bonnie was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Mert in 2019. Bonnie is survived by her son, Gunnar (Kim) Thompson; daughters, Anna Shedlov and Kate (Jamie) Broman; grandkids, Angelina, Eliza, Perrin, Avery and Cooper; and great-granddaughters, Gracie and Daisy.

Bonnie’s family will treasure the love and time she invested in her family throughout her life and carry her memory forward through her recipes, books, art, and all the thoughtful ways she cared for people. The family thanks the staff at Buffalo Hospital for the care Bonnie received at the end of her life.  Bonnie chose to donate her body to the University of Minnesota Anatomy Bequest Program. The family will have a private gathering to celebrate Bonnie’s life.

Bonnie’s wish was for any memorials in her name to be made to the Buffalo Library, 18 Lake Blvd. NW, Buffalo, MN 55313.
