Neil Hammer, 86
Neil C. Hammer passed away at home on July 4, 2025, surrounded by his wife, Marilyn, and family, while listening to the Marine Corps Hymn - a fitting departure.
Neil was born August 30, 1938, to Sophie and Olaf Hammer, in Bird Island, MN. He spent his childhood growing up on the family farm learning many life skills that would serve him well over the years. He was proud to be from Renville County and never forgot where he came from. It’s where he fell in love on top of the Ferris wheel at the county fair when he was 16. It took a little time and maturing, but that first love would become his wife, Marilyn. After high school, he enrolled in the United States Marine Corps. Those who knew him knew being a Marine was one of his proudest accomplishments. In 1961, he convinced Marilyn they were made for each other, and they eloped to the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa, on June 17. A nursing position for Marilyn brought them to Buffalo, MN, shortly after. Little did they know they would make the quaint town on the lake their home for the next 64 years. While Marilyn worked as a nurse in the local doctor’s office, Neil started his career at Oakley National Bank. They had their day jobs and then at night would clean both the bank and the doctor’s office. An opportunity to buy the insurance agency from the bank came in 1977, and Neil jumped at the chance. Thanks to his gift for gab and six-day workweeks, he became a successful, and highly engaged business owner in Buffalo. He owned the insurance agency until his retirement in 2000 when he sold it to Wells Fargo Bank. The drive Neil and Marilyn both shared led them from a trailer home on Lake Pulaski, to a small cabin on the lake, to building their dream home on the east side of the lake. They enjoyed hosting many parties there for family and friends over the years.
Neil was a lifelong learner. He first got the bug to fly while in the Marine Corps and fulfilled that dream by earning his private pilot’s license in 1981. He enjoyed daily coffee chats with friends where they would exchange knowledge and attempt to solve many world problems, both big and small. Neil loved to read; there was always a stack of books by his chair. He loved getting outside and playing a round of golf with his buddies. Neil had a beautiful voice and loved to sing. He was a member of the Bisonaires Male Chorus in the 1960s and also sang in his church choir in both Buffalo and Anna Maria Island, FL. That talent became even better when he decided it was time to learn how to read music. Neil loved visiting with people and enjoyed learning their life stories, knowing everyone has one. Neil and Marilyn enjoyed traveling over the years, as well as spending winters on Anna Maria Island. Neil loved a good joke, even if he couldn’t remember the punchline. Most of all he loved his family, Marilyn, their girls, sons-in-law, and grandchildren.
His absence here on earth will be felt by those who loved him. We’ll honor his legacy by continuing to learn every day, being kind to all we meet, working hard, playing hard, and most importantly, enjoying the journey.
Neil is survived by Marilyn, his wife of 64 years; their daughters, Kelly (Pat) Figley, of Tampa, Florida, Stacy (Don) Johnson, of Lino Lakes, Minnesota, Julie Hannah, of Wyoming, Minnesota; grandchildren, Colin, Olivia, and Noah Figley, Ben and Sam Johnson, Brandon, Meghan and Ryan Hannah; brother, Lloyd (Josephine) Hammer, of England; many nieces and nephews and dear friends.
Neil is preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Virgil (Wilma), Jim, Dick (Lorraine); his sister, Betty (Bill); and son-in-law, Scott Hannah.
We’d like to offer a special thank you to the team at St. Croix Hospice who cared for Neil and helped us all with this journey. You all have a gift, and your time spent with Neil and our family was much appreciated.
A celebration of Neil’s life will be held on Saturday, August 2, at Buffalo United Methodist Church (609 8th Street NW, Buffalo, MN) with visitation at 11:00 a.m., followed by a service at 12:00 noon. Reception to follow. Service will be live-streamed.

Gerald Paulsen, 69
Gerald “Gerry” Michael Paulsen, age 69, of Corcoran, MN, passed away peacefully on June 22, 2025.
Gerry was born the son of Betty and Herbert Paulsen on September 14, 1955, in Minneapolis, MN. He grew up in Minnetonka and eventually moved to Corcoran graduating from Buffalo High School. He went on to attend vocational school, where he earned multiple certificates in construction. Residing in Corcoran for the majority of his life, he worked alongside his father on the family farm and worked full time in the construction industry at Layne Minnesota for over 30 years where he was known for his skill, work ethic, and loyalty. This is a testament to his hardworking spirit and dedication to his craft.
Gerry held a deep love for farm life, spending countless hours working the fields alongside his father. His passion for the land and strong work ethic were more than just hobbies—they were a core part of who he was. Whether it was turning the soil or tending to the day’s tasks, Gerry found purpose and peace in the rhythm of the farm.
Known for his “gift of gab,” Gerry was the life of the party, having a story for every situation and a quick one-liner for every crowd. His laugh was infectious and the sparkle in his eye made you smile, waiting for what he was going to say next. He loved to end each of his Minnesota goodbyes with his catch phrase of the moment, “Drink water, Jesus saves,” “Don’t take any wooden nickels,” “Stay between the ditches,” and “Well…that’s a deep subject,” to name a few. His humor, warmth, strength and steady presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Outside of work, Gerry was an avid outdoorsman and loved shooting clay pigeons, playing horseshoes, 4-wheeling, fishing, and especially loved hunting on his land in Parkers Prairie. He was a lifelong fan of Minnesota sports—cheering passionately for the Vikings, Wild, and his beloved “Twinkies.” His family would spend time together around when the Vikings game was on that Sunday and be treated to the best burgers on the grill. Sometimes, he would swing into the local bar to watch whatever game was on while he played pull tabs, and he usually would win big.
Gerry was a great cook. He loved making pancakes for his kids when they were growing up. Every get together, Gerry would bring his famous baked beans. And every holiday, he would treat everyone to his roasts, waking up extra early to make sure it was cooked perfectly. He cherished spending time with his family, particularly his grandsons, who brought endless joy to his life.
He lived his life by a set of strong values: he was always punctual, financially wise, and carried a grounded, positive attitude that made an impression on everyone he met. He was always there for people - helping however he could. He had many life-long friends, which shows just how much he was loved.
There’s no one like Gerry. He wasn’t just a father—he was a best friend, a role model, and a cornerstone of his family’s identity. He didn’t just pass on knowledge—he passed on a way of living. He will be deeply and greatly missed. He was loved beyond words, and that love will live on forever.
He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Martin; as well as brothers-in-law, Gene Tews and Louie Huber.
He is survived by his children, Alicia Nelson, Malinda (Zach) Gahm, and Easton Paulsen; his girlfriend, Sandy Daniels; as well as grandchildren, Harrison Gahm, Hamilton Gahm, Hawthorne Gahm, and Xavier Nelson; his siblings, Deborah (Dennis Zanto) Paulsen, Sharon Tews, Carole Huber, Daniel (Janet) Paulsen, Kathy (Larry) Kerber, and Gail (Gary) Beck.
A Celebration of Life will be held on September 14, 2025—what would have been Gerry’s 70th birthday—at Liberty Restaurant & Bar in St. Michael, Minnesota, from 12 p.m.-3 p.m. The family welcomes all who knew Gerry to join in sharing stories, laughter, and memories.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you share a memory of Gerry, take a moment to enjoy the outdoors, or tell a good story in his honor.
