Allen Posthumus, 92

Allen Wesley Posthumus, age 92, of Buffalo, MN, and formerly of Stillwater, MN, and Port Isabel, TX, passed away February 19, 2023.

He was born on March 13, 1930, in Halstad, MN, to William and Florence (Vork) Posthumus. Allen spent most of his childhood in Walnut Grove, MN, and then graduated with the class of 1948 from Minneapolis South High School. He furthered his education at St. Cloud State Teacher’s College where he received his undergraduate degree. It was there that he also met his future wife, Joyce Overmeyer, and the two were joined in marriage in Redwood Falls, MN, in 1952. They would go on to share 66 years of loving matrimony.

Allen continued his education (summers) in Greeley, CO, where he earned his master’s degree, and then attended the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul for his specialist degree. He was an elementary school principal and central office administrator for several districts, including the Centennial District, St. Louis Park, North St. Paul, and Stillwater. Although he retired from education in 1993, he was always a teacher at heart. Allen was an outstanding motivator and role model, and always encouraged others to reach their full potential.

Allen loved the outdoors and spent much of his spare time either fishing or boating. When the cold weather arrived in Minnesota, he and Joyce made their way to Port Isabel, TX, to spend the winter months in warmer climates. Allen loved Texas, both for the many wonderful friends he made in the community and for the ample fishing opportunities presented by the Laguna Madre. He spent more than 20 winters in his beloved “sea cottage.”

Allen and Joyce’s faith was important to them, and they were devoted members of Buffalo United Methodist Church and First United Methodist Church in Port Isabel.

Allen’s family was his main priority in life, and those fortunate enough to call him father, brother, grandfather, or great-grandfather can attest to the many ways he drew his loved ones together. Whether he was taking his wife and children down the Mississippi in a 20-foot runabout or renting out a houseboat for four generations of the Posthumus family to enjoy, Allen found ways to create familial bonds and lasting memories.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Joyce; his brother, Warren; and sisters-in-law, Alice and Eleanor Posthumus.

Allen is survived by his sons, Dirk (Jean) and Dan (Cheryl); grandchildren, Anna (Matthew) Deutsch, Steven Posthumus, Laura (Paul) Lundberg, Kelly (Landon) Moline, and Kristin (Elijah Kracht) Posthumus; four great-grandchildren; brother, Gerald “Dutch” Posthumus, of Rochester, MN; and many other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held Friday, February 24, 2023, from 5:00 P.M. - 7:00 P.M. at the Buffalo United Methodist Church (609 8th St. NW, Buffalo, MN 55313). Additional visitation will take place Saturday, February 25, 2023, at 10:00 A.M., with the memorial service beginning at 11:00 A.M., lunch to follow, all at the church. Interment will be held at Lakeview Cemetery in rural Maple Lake/Silver Creek, MN.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Buffalo United Methodist Church or First United Methodist Church in Port Isabel, TX, or to the charity of your choosing.

Arrangements were entrusted to The Peterson Chapel in Buffalo, MN.

Rodney Walters, 80

Rodney Peter Walters, age 80, of Buffalo, passed away on Wednesday, February 15, 2023, at his residence.

He was born on March 25, 1942, in Watkins, the son of Peter and Evelyn (Rodenwald) Walters.

He was a graduate of Kimball High School – Class of 1960.

On March 3, 1962, Rodney Walters and Mary Sue Liedman were joined in holy marriage at St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Kimball.

Rodney was a lifetime member (50+ Years) of Bricklayers Local Union #1 and retired from Axel H. Ohman Concrete and Masonry.

Dad was a humble man – he never spoke of himself and did not want others to talk about him, in terms of accolades, either. However, he was very quick to give a detailed explanation of his grandchildrens’ successes! His favorite role was being Grandpa to ten and Great-Grandpa to three! He enjoyed rocking them when they were babies, playing ball with them in the backyard, taking them on pony rides, watching their sporting events and horse shows, being there when first deer were taken, and sharing big hugs.

He enjoyed raising and showing American Quarter and Paint horses, along with Red Angus beef cattle. Hunting, fishing, and farm work were some of his favorite activities. He truly appreciated the simple things in life…eating venison he had shot and potatoes from his garden.

He was a devoted husband to Mary for 60 years. Other survivors include his daughters, Lynn (John) Leuer, Susan Brown; and son, Ronald; ten grandchildren, Kevin (Kelsey) Brown, Amelia (Peter) Lyngdal, Katie (Jason) Childers, Joe Brown, Donnie Leuer, Jacob Walters, Nick Walters, Carl Leuer and Zach Walters; three great-grandchildren, Legend, Zane and Kelaiah Brown; sisters, Donna (Mike) Bauer, Janice Conley; brother, David (Barb) Walters; and brother-in-law, Bill (Barb) Liedman.

Preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Annette Leuer; son-in-law, Earle Brown; three brothers, Wayne, Gene, and Bob.

Funeral services for Rodney P. Walters were held on Saturday, February 18, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at St Mary of Czestochowa Catholic Church located at 1867 95th Street SE in Delano. Fr Paul Kubista officiated. A visitation was held from 9:30-11:00, at the church prior to the funeral.

The family would like to extend our special thanks to the Allina Health Cancer Institute of Buffalo and Allina Health Hospice for your kindness and gentle care of our Dad during his illness. Memorials in lieu of flowers are requested.

Arrangements were entrusted to The Peterson Chapel in Buffalo, MN.
