Leprechauns, shamrocks, and a sea of green
Maple Lake held its 47th annual St. Patrick’s Day celebration on March 16, bringing its residents and neighboring communities together for a day of fun and celebration. Festivities began at 9:00 a.m. with an Irish Scamper 5K run and a craft sale at Maple Lake Elementary. Several vendors were on hand to showcase their items and talents. The Grande Day Parade kicked off at 1:30 p.m., with Marilyn Groth serving as Grand Marshall, an honor bestowed upon a person who has demonstrated civic mindedness and outstanding service to the community.
Parade goers, many dressed in shades of Irish green, braved a brisk and windy day, lining up early to get a good view of the parade route, which ran along Division Street before turning left down Maple Avenue South and winding back around First Street West towards the finish line. Plenty of sparkling top hats, green sunglasses and beads, along with traditional St. Patrick’s Day costumes and outfits were found amongst the crowd.
Eighty-one floats traveled the parade route. Kids in attendance were given a thrill as float riders threw candy and goodies by the handful, and the children scrambled to fill their bags with the bountiful treats scattered about.
After the hour-long parade, spectators were able to check out some traditional Irish fare at area restaurants, including Mulligan Stew served by the Lions Club. Live music set a festive stage while the Community of Maple Lake continued to gather and celebrate its Irish heritage.
