From Heartbreak to Hope
Award-winning author Johanna Vendel transforms personal tragedy into a global mission, bringing authors together for the Prestigious International Hope Book Awards (PIHBA) and its October 2026 Author of the Year Gala.
A journey that began with heartbreak
Sometimes, the greatest purpose is born from the deepest pain.
Born in South Africa, and now living in Buffalo, Johanna Vendel never imagined that the heartbreaking experiences she endured would one day inspire her to establish an international literary awards organization.
Having lost six immediate family members, including her father, mother, twin sister, two other sisters, and brother, Johanna knows the devastating reality of grief. There were moments when the weight of those losses seemed impossible to carry.
But through her faith in God, she found the strength to continue.
Writing became an outlet for her grief, allowing her to express emotions she had carried for years. What began as a personal journey toward healing eventually became a mission to encourage others facing their own struggles.
“God saved me when I didn’t want to live anymore. Today, I want to use the life He gave me to bring hope to others.”
From writing books to winning international awards
Johanna’s experiences inspired her to write books exploring grief, faith, resilience, survival, and the courage to begin again.
Her published works include “Life? Think Again!!,” “Navigating Through Losses and Grief? Think Again!!,” “Unseen Tears, Beneath the Mask!,” “Still Standing: When Grief Couldn’t Finish Me,” “Echoes of an Orphan’s Heart,” and “Plotting the Murder of Sabrina.”
Vendel’s writing has earned several literary honors:
• International Impact Book Award, July 2024: “Life? Think Again!!” - Autobiography.
• International Impact Book Award, May 2025: “Navigating Through Losses and Grief? Think Again!!” - Grief category.
• Author of the Year Finalist, 2025: “Navigating Through Losses and Grief? Think Again!!”
• Black Diamond Visionary Award, April 2026: Recognition for “Still Standing” and Johanna’s inspirational work.
• Authors Connect Community International, June 2026: President’s Choice and Founder’s Award recognition for “Still Standing.”
• International Christian Book Awards, September 12, 2026: Award recognition for “Unseen Tears, Beneath the Mask!” at the ceremony in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
Although grateful for every award, Johanna discovered something even more meaningful through these experiences: the encouragement an author receives when someone recognizes the value of their story. That realization planted the seed for The Prestigious International Hope Book Awards.
The birth of The Prestigious International Hope Book Awards
Johanna founded The Prestigious International Hope Book Awards (PIHBA) to create opportunities for authors worldwide whose books inspire hope, healing, faith, resilience, and transformation.
She wanted to build more than an awards organization. Her vision was to establish an international community where authors could receive literary recognition, connect with fellow writers, and introduce their books to new audiences.
“Behind every book is an author who has invested time, dedication, and often deeply personal experiences into their writing. I wanted to create a platform where those efforts could be recognized and celebrated.”
Today, PIHBA welcomes authors from different countries, cultures, and literary backgrounds, united by the belief that meaningful storytelling can change lives.
PIHBA Author of the Year 2026
One of the most anticipated events on Johanna’s calendar is the PIHBA Author of the Year Gala, taking place on October 17, at the Wyndham Bloomington Mall of America Hotel in Minnesota.
Authors from around the world will gather for an evening celebrating literary achievement, creativity, and the inspiring stories behind their books.
The event will feature a red carpet, dinner, award presentations, and recognition of the 2026 Author of the Year finalists.
The Author of the Year distinction celebrates an author whose literary work and contribution to meaningful storytelling have earned special recognition through the PIHBA awards program.
For Johanna, the gala is about more than presenting trophies. It is an opportunity for authors to meet one another, celebrate their accomplishments, build lasting friendships, and experience the encouragement of an international literary community.
Following the gala, Johanna will publish another newspaper article featuring photographs, memorable moments, award recipients, and highlights from this special celebration.
A growing legacy of hope
Johanna’s vision continues to expand through Voices of Hope Magazine, her Give Me Hope with Johanna podcast, and Legacy of Hope Press.
In October 2026, she also plans to launch PIHBA Story-to-Screen in partnership with BluntImage, an initiative designed to help authors explore opportunities to adapt their books for film and television. The program will develop short cinematic presentations and pitch materials for selected projects that may be introduced to production companies and other film industry professionals.
Despite these growing initiatives, Johanna remains committed to the mission that inspired everything she has built.
“I cannot change the losses I have experienced, but I can choose what I do with the life God has given me. If my story encourages one person to keep going, or helps one author believe that their words matter, then my pain has not been without purpose.”
Every story matters and every voice deserves to be heard
