Melvin Eggersgluss, 94

Melvin (Mel) V. Eggersgluss, 94, of Buffalo, Minnesota, passed away in the comfort of his home surrounded by family on March 20, 2020.

Mel was born Oct 15, 1925, to Ernest and Emma Eggersgluss in Howard Lake, MN. He graduated from Buffalo High School in 1943. Mel joined the Marine Corp and was stationed in Dutch Harbor, Alaska from Nov. 1943 to Oct. 1944. Corporal Eggersgluss then transferred to Quantico, Virginia for six months for Small Arms Mechanics course. He served in the Korean War as Staff Sergeant and at the Chosen Reservoir, where he was wounded by sniper fire. Through extreme pain and numbing cold, he voluntarily stayed at his post until he was injured again by grenade. His coolness under fire, resolute determination, and unselfish devotion to duty were a source of great inspiration to all who observed him. He was awarded the Bronze Star for Battle of Inchon and the Gold star (2nd Bronze Star) and Purple Heart for Chosin Reservoir. He would often reminisce about his military career as the “Best time of my Life,” (even though he went on to have 15 beautiful children!) He was medically discharged from the Marines due to the injuries sustained.

Mel married the love of his life, Marilyn Moore, in 1952.  They stuck together through thick and thin. Together they raised 15 children, 23 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

He received his Electrical License from Dunwoody Institute and had a lifelong career as an electrician. He retired in 1990 but remained “on-call” to family, neighbors and friends his entire life. His unselfish Devotion to Duty extended to his family, church and country were the foundation of his character.

Mel was a voracious reader- a passion he passed down to his children. He enjoyed bingo, jigsaw puzzles, blackjack and cold beer. He got a kick out of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mel was a Republican to the core, a devout Catholic and a fast driver (racking up speeding tickets well into his 90’s). We will miss his dry sense of humor, the twinkle in his eye, and those boisterous political discussions!

Mel was preceded in death by: his wife, Marilyn; parents, Ernest and Emma; brother, Ralph Eggersgluss; sister, Elnor (Babe) Doherty; nephews, Bill Doherty and Gary Eggersgluss; niece, Louise Moore; great-nephew, Patrick Randall; brothers-in-law, George (Delores) Moore, Orville (Sarah) Moore, Russell (Laverne) Moore, Eddie Moore, Denny (Ronni) Moore; sister-in-law, Lauretta (Benny) Lepinski.

Mel is survived by: his children, Mary Jahnke,  David Eggersgluss, Joanne (Pete) Ahearn, Christine (Din) Buckvold, Janie(Craig) Matthys, Kathleen Gerlach, Daniel (Cheryl) Eggersgluss, Julie (Tim) Moseley, Peter Eggersgluss, Marty (Michelle) Eggersgluss, Tom Eggersgluss, Annie (Roger Stroud) Eggersgluss, Joe Eggersgluss, Bob Eggersgluss, and Lynn (Bob) Vashro; brother-in-law, Marvin (Sally) Moore; sisters-in-laws, Kathleen Ratican and Ronni Moore; 23 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews, family and friends.
