Katherine Coolen, 75

Katherine J. Coolen, age 75, of Buffalo passed away on Sunday, February 21, 2021.

She was born in Minneapolis on April 22, 1945, the daughter of Russell and Mona (Perrin) Dvorak.

On September 11, 1972, Katherine J. Dvorak was joined in holy marriage to Christian C. Coolen at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Buffalo. 

She had a love for music. Katherine also enjoyed traveling, gardening and animals.

She is survived by her loving husband, Christian C. Coolen, of Buffalo; a daughter, Christine (Mark) Strehlow, of St. Michael; granddaughters, Elizabeth Strehlow and Jessica Chaffee; a great-grandson, Brady; many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Mary Dvorak; and by brothers, Hallie and Robert Dvorak.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Katherine J. Coolen will be held on Thursday, February 25 at 11:00 a.m. at the St. Michael Catholic Church in St. Michael. Interment St. Mark’s Cemetery-Pelican Lake. A visitation will be at the church on Thursday, February 25 from 9:30 a.m. until the time of Mass.

Casket Bearers will be Mark Strehlow, William Coolen, Fred Bunting, Phillip Dvorak, John Coolen and Jason Weber.

Memorials preferred to The Adult Day Center in Buffalo, MN.

Orville Horsch, 91

Orville Arthur Horsch, age 91, of rural Waverly, passed away on Wednesday, February 17, 2021 at Lake Ridge Care Center in Buffalo.

He was born on April 14, 1929 in Howard Lake, the son of Arthur and Elsie (Schmieg) Horsch.

On August 28, 1951, Orville A. Horsch and Carol H. Duske were joined in holy marriage at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Montrose. Orville and Carol would of celebrated 70 years of marriage this coming August.

Orville was employed as a janitor for over 19 years at The Montrose Elementary School and Buffalo Junior High School.

He enjoyed farming, mowing his lawn, sawing wood, dancing, and a collector of Oliver model tractors.

He was a faithful member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Montrose. He was the past president of the congregation, trustee, money counter, taught Sunday School, and was a choir member.

Orville is survived by his loving wife, Carol H. Horsch; children, Deborah Ann Horsch and Paul Orville (Chersti) Horsch; grandchildren, Austin P. Horsch, Gavin C. Horsch, Hataleen Martinson, Ronisha Hawkins, and Bird Hawkins; other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Elsie Horsch, and by two brothers, Jerome and Virgil Horsch.

A private family funeral service for Orville Horsch was held on Saturday, February 20, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Montrose. Pastor James Grabitske officiated. Carol Wendorff was the organist for the Funeral Service. Inurnment St. Paul’s Cemetery. A visitation was held on Friday, February 19, at the church from 4-8 p.m.

Casket Bearers were Scott Duske, Greg Duske, Joe Mauk, Doug Duske, Dale Bauman, and Garret Duske.

The Peterson Chapel in Buffalo served the family.

Delores Johnson, 85

Delores Ann Johnson, age 85, of Buffalo and formerly of Minnetonka, passed away Tuesday February 16, 2021 at Park View Care Center.

She was born in Thief River Falls on February 20, 1935, the daughter of Walfred and Verna (Trochmann) Carlson.

On September 28, 1968, Delores A. Carlson and Harvey W. Johnson were joined in holy marriage in Thief River Falls. God blessed their marriage with two daughters. She was a longtime member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. She enjoyed her church family and being a part of the Priscilla Circle. Delores was devoted to her family! She enjoyed sewing, baking, gardening, collecting stamps, sending and collecting cards, and music, especially hymns.

Delores is survived by loving daughters, Lynda (David) Resch and Sandra (Peter) Churness; grandchildren, Hannah, Megan, and Caleb Churness; sisters-in-law, Ivadell Carlson and Faye Carlson; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.  

She was preceded in death by husband, Harvey Walton Johnson on August 23, 2013; her parents; brothers, Leonard and Kenneth Carlson.  

Funeral services for Delores A. Johnson will be held on Saturday, February 27 at 3 p.m. at The Peterson Chapel in Buffalo. Pastor Peter Churness (son-in-law) will officiate. Interment Lakeview Cemetery. Visitation will be at the Funeral Home on Saturday, February 27 from 1:30 p.m. until time of service.

Carolyn McCanless, 96

Carolyn “Connie” Kreitlow McCanless, 96, a 39-year resident of Fountain Hills, Arizona, died peacefully on Wednesday, February 10, 2021 at her home.

She was born on November 15, 1924 in Montrose, Minnesota and graduated from Buffalo High School in 1942. During WWII she served as a Code Girl with the Army Signal Corp in Washington, D.C (See the article about her experiences - “Camouflaging Pigeons” published December 20, 2017 in the Fountain Hills Times).

While in Washington, she met Alden “Mac” McCanless. They were married on February 12, 1945. At one point during Mac’s many transfers with the Internal Revenue Service, she refused to unpack the dining room boxes – they were transferred again a few months later. When Mac retired, he told Connie to choose their next move; she chose Arizona where Mac built their home in Fountain Hills. Connie completed a Medical Assistant class in Scottsdale and worked at the Family Practice Clinic on Palisades Boulevard. Connie and Mac loved to travel, bought an RV, and she continued to travel after Mac’s death (1996).

Connie is survived by her sister, Ruth Vail; children, Lauri and Scott; daughter-in-law, Imelda; nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Clara and Harry Kreitlow; her husband; and her siblings, Arthur, James, John, and Mary.

The family wishes to thank Misty, Carol, Andrea, Tina, and Audra for their loving care of Connie. The family also wishes to thank Home Instead Fountain Hills and Hospice Family Care for their support.

A memorial gathering will be held at a later date. Memorial donations may be directed to Extended Hands Food Bank of Fountain Hills, Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church, or the charity of your choice.
