Duane Barthel, 83
Duane David Barthel, age 83, of St. Michael, passed away surrounded by his family on Sunday, May 7, 2023, at North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale.
He was born on November 26, 1939, in St. Michael, the son of Alfred and Bernadette (Vetsch) Barthel and was raised in St. Michael.
Duane was a member of St. Michael High School Class of 1959.
He honorably served his Country in The United States Army Reserves.
On October 13, 1962, Duane D. Barthel and Kathleen A. O’Donnell were joined in holy matrimony at the St. Michael Catholic Church in St. Michael. God blessed their marriage with seven children.
Duane started Duane’s Septic Service in 1991.
He was a lifelong member of the St. Michael Catholic Church in St. Michael. Duane was a former usher and Eucharistic Minister. He also belonged to The Knights of Columbus and served as the St. Michael Catholic Cemetery’s Sexton for forty years.
Duane enjoyed family gatherings, gardening, maintaining the tractors and equipment, and traveling with his wife, Kathy.
Survived by his loving wife of sixty years, Kathy Barthel; children, Jeanne (Wes) Holland, Keith (Sue) Barthel, Lorianne (Scott) Ende, Tim (Debbie) Barthel, Theresa (Jim) Eicher, and Anne (Roger) Tiernan; daughter-in-law, Kathy Jo Barthel (Kerry’s wife); twenty-nine grandchildren; and forty-one great-grandchildren; brothers, Willard “Willie” (Mary Jane) Barthel, Kenneth (Catherine) Barthel, and Jerome (Shirley) Barthel; brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Preceded in death by his son, Kerry Barthel, and by his parents.
A Concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial for Duane Barthel will be held on Wednesday, May 24, 2023, at 11:00 A.M. at the St. Michael Catholic Church in St. Michael.
Interment will follow at the St. Michael Cemetery.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 23, from 4-8 P.M. AT THE CHURCH’S St. Joseph Hall. A Rosary will be recited at 8:00 P.M. Further visitation will be held on Wednesday morning, May 24, one hour prior to Mass at the church.

Rudolph Burgstaler, 85
Rudolph “Rudy” R. Burgstaler, age 85, of Kimball, MN, died on Thursday May 4, 2023, at Meeker Manor in Litchfield, MN.
A funeral Service was held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday May 13, 2023, at Ostmark Lutheran Church in Watkins, MN. A visitation was held from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. on Friday, May 12, 2023, at Johnson Hagglund Funeral and Cremation in Litchfield, MN, and one hour prior to the service at church on Saturday.
Interment was held at the Ostmark/West Kingston Mission Cemetery in Watkins, MN.

Lois Diers, 91
Lois Marie Diers was born on December 17, 1931, at Buffalo, Minnesota, to Roy and Mabel Mainquist. She grew up on a farm in rural Buffalo and graduated from Buffalo High School in 1949. On May 26, 1951, at the Swedesburg-Marysville Lutheran Church in rural Waverly, she married Gordon LeRoy Diers, of Howard Lake. The couple made their home on a farm between Waverly and Howard Lake where they raised four boys.
Lois and Gordon retired in 1988 and moved to Howard Lake. They enjoyed traveling and took their family on many memorable camping trips across the US. She was a dedicated mother and a frequent volunteer at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Howard Lake.
Lois passed away on May 8, 2023, at Stoney River Assisted Living in Ramsey, Minnesota. She had reached the age of 91 years, four months, and 21 days.
Survivors include her children, Mark, of Howard Lake, Timothee, of Billinudgel, Australia; Paul (Connie), of Oak Grove, MN, and Brian (Judith), of Urbana, IL; grandchildren, Mitchell, of Oak Grove, Andrew (Kirstyn), of Modesto, CA, Sophia, of Madison, WI, and Emma, of Minneapolis; and great-grandchildren, William and Samuel, of Modesto. Lois will be missed by all that knew her.
Lois is preceded in death by her husband, Gordon; a brother; and a sister.
Funeral Service was at 2 P.M., Saturday, May 13, 2023, at St. John’s Lutheran Church of Howard Lake. Visitation began one hour prior to service at church, Internment Howard Lake Cemetery.

Olivia Hendrickson, 17
Olivia M. Hendrickson, age 17, of Maple Lake, died suddenly on May 13, 2023, in Buffalo.
A gathering in celebration of Olivia’s life will be held 2-4 p.m. on Tuesday, May 23, 2023, at Ney Memorial Park, Maple Lake, with a Remembrance Service at 3 p.m. Please dress casually for the weather and feel free to bring a chair. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to The Nature Conservancy or to NAMI.
Olivia Marie Hendrickson was born August 31, 2005, in Buffalo, to James and Tamara (Leff) Hendrickson. She lived in Maple Lake through the 2nd grade when the family moved to Utah. They moved back to Maple Lake and Buffalo when she was in the 4th grade. Liv was currently a junior at Monticello High School. She loved to swim, draw, write, go for walks, and research places to travel. Olivia was connected with animals and nature and enjoyed the time spent with both. The care of our planet was important to Liv, she even thought of political solutions to care for our environment. She was a driven individual that was tenacious in achieving her goal.
Depression overcame Liv in the past couple years. The illness became too great for Livvy to handle and eventually depression took her life.
Liv will be remembered for her beautiful heart and great spirit. Her quick wit and sharp tongue will be missed especially in the quiet times.
Olivia is survived by her parents, Jimmy Hendrickson and Tammy Hendrickson; sisters, Kaya and Kyra Hendrickson; grandparents, Jack and Mary Hendrickson and Gary and Mary Lynn Leff; aunts and uncles, Anna Hendrickson, Natalie and Chris McClory, and Chuck Leff; cousins, Brittany Cargill, Shay and Allie McClory; some close friends; and her pets, Tallulah, Delilah, Oslo, Skye, and Reaper.

William Hinkemeyer, 66
William E. “Bill” Hinkemeyer, age 66, of Dassel, passed away on Monday, May 8, 2023.
He was born on August 23, 1956, in St. Cloud, the son of Alfred “Al” and Elizabeth “Betty” (Dingmann) Hinkemeyer.
Bill graduated from Buffalo High School in 1974.
He owned and operated an Auto Body Repair Shop in Rockford and in Cokato for many years.
He loved going to the lake. Bill also enjoyed playing cards, cribbage, muscle cars, family, and friends.
Survived by two children, Jason Hinkemeyer, of Delano, and Christina “Tina” (Tracy) Vetruba, of Montrose; grandchildren, Nicolle and Samantha; Jadin and Hailey; siblings, Bonnie (Scott) Devitt, Barbara McIntosh, Michael (Tracy) Hinkemeyer, Michele Hinkemeyer and Stacy Hinkemeyer and Patricia Hinkemeyer; other relatives and many friends.
Preceded in death by grandchildren, Jacob Vetruba, Becca and Abby Hinkemeyer; his parents, aunts and uncles.
A Memorial Service for William “Bill” Hinkemeyer will be held on Thursday, May 18, at 6:00 p.m. at The Peterson Chapel in Buffalo.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, May 18, two hours prior to services at the funeral home.

Randy Kruck, 70
Randy R. Kruck, age 70, of Buffalo, passed away May 14, 2023. (Full notice to appear next week). Funeral service will be held Saturday, May 20, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. with visitation beginning at 9:00 a.m. all at Buffalo Ev. Covenant Church in Buffalo, MN. Luncheon to follow the service at church. Patricia Norine, 80
Patricia Anne Norine (nee Skoog) was born in Litchfield, Minnesota, on December 26, 1942; baptized at Gethsemane Lutheran in Dassel, Minnesota, on February 21, 1943; and also confirmed in her faith there on May 19, 1957. She entered eternal life with her Savior Jesus Christ on May 9, 2023, in Grand Forks, North Dakota. She was 80 years old.
Pat was a daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, and child of God. She was also a hometown Dassel girl with a Swedish heritage that she would tell you all about, if she were still here. She was born to Jady and Lillian Skoog, the day after Christmas in 1942. Her childhood in her hometown was filled with memories of her family, her beloved younger sister, Jadynne, “Punky” (Patty and Punky – the Skoog Girls), as well as her friends at school and church. She would tell you she was a cautious and obedient child. She never claimed to be very athletic, but she was a good swimmer, and she played well with others. In her last years, she enjoyed meeting and reminiscing with her lifelong Dassel friends that she knew “since she was six,” she’d tell you.
After high school, Pat attended three-and-a-half years of college. She talked fondly of being part of the Blue Line cheer club at Gustavus Adolphus College. She always wanted to finish college, but she chose instead to marry hometown Dassel boy, LeRoy, on May 8, 1963, and move to Glendive, Montana, where he worked in broadcasting. Shortly thereafter, they moved to Marshall, Minnesota, and Pat became a church secretary using her two-year degree in Parish Work. After six years of marriage, they adopted son, Jonz. LeRoy’s work took them to Norfolk, Nebraska, and then Tulsa, Oklahoma, where they adopted a little girl, Amy. The family moved to the Ozarks at Siloam Springs, Arkansas, for a couple of years, and she thought it would be a good idea to host a high school German foreign exchange student just at the same time LeRoy’s work took him back to Minnesota. That year, she was practically a single parent of two challenging high school boys and a middle school girl before the family joined LeRoy in Buffalo, Minnesota. During these years, she served as a summer camp cook at a Lutheran Bible Camp in the Ozark foothills of Oklahoma. As the children moved out of the house, Pat returned to parish work as the secretary at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Buffalo for almost two decades. LeRoy preceded her in death in 1998 when he was just 57 years old. Pat mourned his death and then dedicated her retirement time to helping singles and widows with the Project Compassion Ministry at the church.
Pat believed that with faith in Christ as a guiding light, hard work, and a belief in yourself, a person could accomplish anything. She felt that God would bring people into your life at just the right time to help you, to redirect you, to strengthen you, and to see you through.
Pat had a quirky and upbeat sense of the world. A conversation with Pat was always interesting and an exercise in mental agility. She had a talent for making the ordinary more interesting. Listening to one of her many stories was like turning on a television show halfway through, and just as you were getting up to speed on the plot, she’d change the channel on you and launch into a completely different but equally entertaining story. She traveled the world with both family and friends, visiting New Zealand, Tahiti, Europe, the Holy Land, and Panama at various times during her life.
Pat died one day after what would have been her 60th wedding anniversary to LeRoy. She was also preceded in death by parents, Jady and Lillian Skoog.
Survived by a sister, Jadynne (Don) Berg, Venice, Florida; son, Jonz (Karina) Norine, Redding, California; daughter, Amy (Troy) Noeldner, Grand Forks, North Dakota; grandchildren, Madisynn Noeldner, Lars Norine, Nils Norine, JD Noeldner; and wonderful nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews who were very special to her - Melissa, Mike, Paul, Todd, Carrie, Heidi, Michaela, Grace, Lucas, Derrick, and Joshua.

A Christian Funeral is planned for June 23, 2023, at 11 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 302 Second Street Northeast, Buffalo, MN, followed by interment at 2:30 p.m. at the Dassel Community Cemetery, County Road 4, Dassel, MN.
Nancy Thompson, 69
Nancy Lynn Thompson, age 69, of Buffalo, Minn., passed away on April 20 at Fairview Southdale Hospital following recent surgeries. She was surrounded by music and the singing of friends and family.
Born in Hibbing and raised in Richfield, Nan lived in Minneapolis and moved to Buffalo five years ago, where she had many special friends and a beloved community of piano students.
Preceded in death by her parents, Wayne Thompson in 2017 and Lois Falconer Thompson in 2018. Survived by twin sisters, Lori and Karen, Patty (Jeff Strickler; nieces, Ally and Carly; and grandnephew, Luca); cousins; and extended family.
Like any good storyteller, Nan always said that any story worth telling is worth embellishing. But her story needs no embellishing:
She loved hard – her friends, her family, her piano students and their families. Her adopted community of Buffalo. The sparkling lake by her home, where she took many beautiful sunset pictures. Her Steinway grand piano. Her second family – the fellow piano students and colleagues of Paul Freed and the other “Denizens of Scott Hall” at the University of Minnesota, where she earned her master’s degree in music. Her beloved kitty, Maui.
To her many wonderful friends and family: Please play the music that uplifts and moves you. Tip your hat. Raise a glass in her honor. And laugh, please, laugh! (Nan had a wicked sense of humor.)
Nan loved antiques, books, and beautiful things. And most of all, beautiful people. If you are missing her right now, you were in her special circle.
A private burial has been held at Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held Saturday, May 27, at Edina Morningside/Linden Hills Community Church, 4201 Morningside Road, Edina. Visitation and coffee at 10 a.m.; service at 11 a.m.; luncheon to follow. (Please allow extra time for road construction around the church.)
