WCROC researchers evaluate annual flower cultivars under regional conditions in order to provide cultivar recommendations for hardiness zone 4.

Each year, the Top Ten Performing Annuals are selected from the hundreds of cultivars trialed. According to horticulture co-director Esther Jordan, there were several impressive varieties that did extremely well this year. See the 2022 Top Ten report.

Annual flowers are evaluated on unique characteristics, exceptional performance, color and vigor under regional conditions. A visual evaluation and score are given to each variety several times during the growing season.

Only the highest-rated cultivars earn the distinction as a Top Ten Performing Annual. Flowers earning high scores, or honorable mentions, are highlighted in gray.

Included in our 2022 report are Consumer Favorites, which the public voted on during a horticulture open house in late July.

You can also see the results of the 2022 perennial trial report.
