LaVonne Bowers, 82

LaVonne “Bonnie” Mae Bowers, age 82, of Buffalo, passed away Wednesday, November 17, 2021. She was born in Bairoil, Wyoming, the daughter of Charles and Eula (Blackwell) Kercher.

Bonnie spent her childhood in Wyoming, Oklahoma, and later in the Saginaw Bay area in Michigan. She attended Central Michigan College where she majored in Elementary Education. Her college roommate, Ida Bowers, introduced Bonnie to her brother, Maurice. On June 16, 1962, LaVonne Kercher and Maurice Bowers were united in marriage in Honor, Michigan. She taught elementary school in Michigan for several years before later devoting her time to raising her children. She was a great educator, both as a teacher and as a mother.

Born into a family of musicians, Bonnie was a lifelong lover of music, playing the piano and singing throughout her life. She enjoyed using odd pronunciations or made-up words in everyday conversation and sometimes, when the need arose, in a close game of Scrabble. Combining her musical and linguistic talents, she created a truly memorable campfire song that will be enjoyed for many generations to come. Bonnie also enjoyed anything outdoors, including camping, fishing and gardening, and she especially loved spending time with her family and friends. She was a caring individual, always quick with a smile and laugh.

She was preceded in death by her mother and stepfather, Eula and Herman Damm; father and stepmother, Charles and LaDena Kercher; and brothers, Charles and Martin Kercher.

John Dehmer, 74

John Roman Dehmer, age 74, of St. Michael, MN, passed away on Thursday, November 18, 2021. He was born on May 1, 1947, in Minneapolis, to Rudolph Dehmer and Laura (Eicher) Dehmer.

John grew up with his four older siblings and twin sister on the family homestead in St. Michael, MN. He graduated high school in 1965 and joined the Army and attended basic training in Ft. Knox, Kentucky. John had an affinity for History, Science, and Language and began studies at St. Cloud State and the U of M. He and Julie (Setzler), high school sweethearts, were married on February 24, 1968. In 1972, they began building their dream home in the village of John’s ancestors. The couple lived in that home for the rest of their lives, raising their six children, creating memories and lifelong friendships. John worked hard as a laborer in various positions over the years, including 18 years at John Deere in Bloomington, MN, until his retirement in 1995.

John had a dream of becoming a history teacher. He always said that history was being made every moment and that it was just a collection of real life stories, waiting to be told. He could keep a group of unruly teens rapt with attention at the telling of a Cossack battle in the Crimean war. He made the simple tale of the foundation of his town and the history of his family’s immigration from Germany an epic saga, and authored dozens of exciting bedtime stories in his mind to entertain his children on cold winter nights.

He had a massive collection of books on both his shelves and in his electronic library. Though he was a bibliophile and intellectual, he had a love and joy of hunting, fishing, nature walks in the woods with his children, “magicking” candy, hunting for morel mushrooms, making traditional homemade pretzels, pickles, and sauerkraut. John became known as the town’s Schnitzelbank leader, chanting the German folk tune to crowds of children and adults at the bierstube festival and continuing the tradition at family gatherings as his children and grandchildren grew under the admiration and glowing love of their faithful, brilliant, and patriotic patriarch.

In later years, as his hair and beard turned bright white, he took on the role of everyone’s favorite Santa Claus at the American Legion and created wonderful memories for hundreds of children, many of whom would see him at church during other parts of the year, and be thrilled that they attended the same church as The Real Santa!

John was a lifelong member and supporter of St. Michael Catholic Church in St. Michael, MN. He lived his faith in a steady, quiet, and traditional way, leading his children and grandchildren to the Sacraments with constant prayer and sacrifice. John prayed the Rosary and Chaplet of Divine Mercy every day for his family and everyone who was in need of prayer, but especially for the poor souls in purgatory.

John was preceded in death by his loving wife, Julie; son, Nicholas Dehmer; and granddaughter, Laurencia Witschen.

He is survived by his children, Laura (Butch) Nielsen, Katrina (Matt) Witschen, daughter-in-law, Katie Dehmer, Peter (Janel) Dehmer, Rudy (Marissa Powers) Dehmer, Anna (Matt) Mrdutt; 39 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild; brothers and sisters, Francis (Jan) Dehmer, Mary (Al) Gindele, Thomas (Judy) Dehmer, Jerry (Cecelia) Dehmer, and twin sister, Sr. “Bonnie” Joanne Dehmer.

Visitation for Julie and John was held Monday, November 22, 2021, from 4:00 to 8:00 PM, with a prayer service and time of sharing at 7:15 PM, at St. Michael Catholic Church in St. Michael. A Mass of Christian Burial for Julie and John was held Tuesday, November 23, 2021, at 11:00 AM, with visitation one hour prior, at St. Michael Catholic Church with Father Joseph Zabinski, Father Andrew Stueve, and Deacon Steven Dupay as Con-celebrants. Julie Dehmer, 73

Julie Ann Dehmer, age 73, of St. Michael, MN, passed away Sunday, November 7, 2021. She was born December 28, 1947, in Minneapolis, the daughter of Richard “Bud” and Mary (Nelles) Setzler.

She was raised in Osseo, MN, and attended St. Michael Catholic High School in St. Michael, where she graduated in 1965. Julie began nursing school when she was 17 years old in Minneapolis and became a Registered Nurse in 1967.

Julie married her high school sweetheart, John Dehmer, in 1968. They made their home in St. Michael and set about creating a family and circle of friends about which Julie had always dreamed.

Julie worked in many different places and for many different people but always as a Registered Nurse and a faithful servant of others. When the law of the land was changed to allow abortion in 1973, Julie took up the pro-life cause and always fought for people to recognize the inherent value and dignity of each human life, no matter the state of disability or stage of development. Julie was a faith-filled believer and promulgated the devotion to the Seven Sorrows of Mary. Julie had an uncanny ability to know when someone was suffering and would act to alleviate it, no matter how burdensome for her.

Even though she never wanted attention on herself, she was such a bright light in the world, that everyone who met and knew her could never forget her! She made every-day walks in the neighborhood marvelous adventures of exploration. She could take a mundane tale told to her and make it sound like an epic experience in her version of the re-telling. Julie never cared about possessions or riches, and generously gave even if it was all she had. She focused particularly on making each of her beloved grandchildren feel special and loved. They were some of her best friends. Her family to her was worth more than gold, and each friend she made in life was like a precious jewel.

Julie was preceded in death by her parents, Richard “Bud” and Mary Setzler; son, Nicholas Dehmer; and granddaughter, Laurencia Witschen.

She is survived by her husband, John Dehmer; children, Laura (Butch) Nielsen, Katrina (Matt) Witschen; daughter-in-law, Katie Dehmer, Peter (Janel) Dehmer, Rudy (Marissa Powers) Dehmer, Anna (Matt) Mrdutt; 39 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild; brothers and sisters, Janet (Leon) Breun, Arnold (Kathy) Setzler, Steven (Carolyn) Setzler, and Barbara Setzler; dear brothers and sisters in-law, Francis (Jan) Dehmer, Mary (Al) Gindele, Thomas (Judy) Dehmer, Jerry (Cecelia) Dehmer, and Sr. “Bonnie” Joanne Dehmer.

Visitation was held Monday, November 22, 2021, from 4:00 to 8:00 PM, with a prayer service and time of sharing at 7:15 PM, at St. Michael Catholic Church in St. Michael. A Con-celebrated Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, November 23, 2021, at 11:00 AM, with visitation one hour prior, at St. Michael Catholic Church with Father Joseph Zabinski, Father Andrew Stueve, and Deacon Steven Dupay as Con-celebrants. Paula Schmidt, 52

Paula Rhea Gilles Schmidt, age 52, of Maple Lake, Minnesota, passed away September 28, 2021.

She was born on September 13, 1969, in Robbinsdale, Minnesota, to Leonard and Mary (Puncochar) Gilles.

Paula graduated from Maple Lake High School with the class of 1987. She briefly attended the University of Minnesota-Morris following her graduation.

She co-owned and worked in the roofing business for many years, and also worked at the American Legion in Maple Lake. When she wasn’t working, you could find her spending numerous hours volunteering at her children’s school. Paula was the type of person they’d would want to help put together events. She was extremely organized and reliable, and kept everyone on track for all the activities going on at the school.

She loved to host parties and was especially fond of Christmas time. She made it special for everyone; she’d spend days preparing her house – every room was elaborately adorned with festive decor. Her house was transformed into her very own winter wonderland! Paula was also an avid scrapbooker and was into researching her family genealogy.

She is survived by her sons, Tanner Schmidt (special friend, Lindsay Ward) and Jordan Schmidt; grandchildren, Elijah and Isabelmay Schmidt; parents, Leonard and Mary Gilles; and many other relatives and friends.

Paula was preceded in death by Baby Taylor Schmidt; her grandparents, Helen and Dutch Puncochar and Emily and Baltis Gilles; and aunts and uncles.
