Obituaries 11/18/21

Marvin Decker, 95

Marvin Patrick Decker was born December 18, 1925, to Isadore and Elizabeth Decker, of Waverly, MN. He was unable to serve his country due to multiple bouts of rheumatic fever as a young adult. Until he moved to Assisted Living in Buffalo, his address was always Waverly, and he was a lifelong member of St. Mary’s Parish. Dad attended daily Mass after he retired. When the church was renovated a couple of years ago, they found that the floor beneath Dad’s pew was worn where his feet shuffled on the tile. He often arrived at church before the doors were opened. If Dad had been a man of eloquent prayers, he would say this prayer now:

Lord, I did my best.

I loved and cared for my wife, Tillie (Cecilia Heurung), of 62 years, my children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. I wasn’t much for expressing my feelings with words, but they saw the delight in my eyes whenever they visited. I worked hard and provided for my family, retiring as a truck driver for Red Owl Stores after many safe-driver years. I liked to fish and garden and shared my “catch” and “harvest” with many who could not fish or garden. I enjoyed camping, especially with the family on Labor Day weekends. I was proud to be a member of the Knights of Columbus, delivered Meals on Wheels and enjoyed helping Sister Kathleen, Sister Irene and Sister Donna deliver clothing donations. It was especially fun when Sister Irene gave me directions and then proceeded to get a bit lost in her vehicle!

As a lifelong Waverly resident, I served on the Fire Department for many years. St. Mary’s has record of my Baptism, First Communion and Confirmation. I attended St. Mary’s Grade and High School and was always proud to proclaim that I graduated 2nd of the boys in my class (there were 2 boys in my class).

At 91, I moved from Waverly to The Glenn Senior Living in Buffalo. Although my mind and body began to fail me, the staff delighted in my smiles and humor. God saw fit to keep me on this earth until age 95. He called me Home on November 12, 2021.

Lord, I did my best.  Please, Lord, now let me rest.

Dad and his family – Ken Decker (friend Alice Olson), Karen Rassat (John), Dan Decker (Wendy), Jim Decker (Becky), nine grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren -  are grateful for the kindnesses shown to Dad, especially when he left Waverly. So many Waverly friends and neighbors visited him and kept him in their prayers. Romey and Berneal Decker (Dad’s only sibling) visited him often, and we appreciate their support. Special thanks to Father O’Hotto, JoAnn LePage and Carol Tuchtenhagen for their visits to Dad, delivery of sacraments and notes of encouragement. We can’t say enough about the staff at The Glenn who befriended him and took such good care of him for these years. It was a comfort to know that he was well cared for, did not suffer great pain, and was always treated to extra desserts when he wanted them! Sometimes in the past few months, we wondered why Dad continued to linger on this earth. We finally decided that it may have been the good food at The Glenn that kept him from going Home sooner. We are also very grateful for the Hospice nurses, Chaplain Dale and the staff who helped to make Dad comfortable to the end of his days.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Marvin Decker will be held on Tuesday, November 23, 2021, at 10:30 A.M., at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Waverly.  Father Kenneth O’Hotto will be the Celebrant for the Mass.

Monica was incredibly talented with acrylic painting and would create beautiful Christmas ornaments and paintings for her loved ones to enjoy. She was a member of the Wright County Choral Group and had a beautiful singing voice. She loved karaoke nights singing songs from Grease and was always ready to join her friends for happy hour drinks. Most importantly, she loved to have fun and never missed an opportunity to have a good time with friends and family.

Monica was a true friend to anyone she met. She was loving, intelligent, patient, resilient, and loyal. She was a light that shone so brightly, and will continue to shine even with her passing.
