Sharon Dierks

Sharon Rae Thorp, (Munson, Dierks) entered heaven from Lake Ridge Hospice House in Buffalo, MN on September 25, 2021. She died peacefully.

Sharon was the oldest of five children, Randy (Diane), Diane Hudgins (Bob), Ron (Jeannie) and Tim (Laurie), born to Emma and Ray Thorp in Atwater, Minnesota. She was a 4-H kid, a cheerleader, and the first in her family to graduate from the University of Minnesota. Her Beta of Clovia sorority sisters became lifelong friends, sharing round robin letters and summer vacations for decades. Student teaching brought her to Buffalo where she met and married the agriculture teacher Gene Munson in 1961.

The two moved to Maple Plain, MN where the first three of four children entered the family, Jane Robin, James Brian (‘63-’65), and David Eugene (Janelle). The family returned to Buffalo to open the Farm and Home store on Hwy 55. Gene was injured in a car accident just before Kathryn Jean (Munson) Baurenschmitt (Wayne) was born. There was so much support for our family from the people of Buffalo, especially the Buffalo Presbyterian Church. These friendships remain strong today.

Sharon taught Home Economics at Buffalo Junior High for 28 years, created Buff-Hello welcome service introducing new community members to local churches and businesses, sat on the City Planning Commission, built a home, which she decorated and redecorated, earned 90 graduate credits, gardened, and managed to attend most of our sporting events, dance recitals, and chaperoned the after-school ski bus.

The advent of Earl Dierks, in 1974 added romance and four additional children to her family; Dennis (Nancy), Sheryl Johnson (Wes), Joel (Maria) and Mark (Julie). Together, they created a family of seven children between the ages of seven and twenty years. Once the kids left home, Sharon began attending St. John’s Lutheran Church with her loving husband, Earl.

Retirement was very good for Sharon and Earl. They moved to a house on Maple Lake hosting swimming and boating parties, taught skiing at Powder Ridge, were active members of Buffalo Health Club, and had a ten-year modeling career doing TV and magazine ads and were extras in several films that were shot in Minnesota. Sharon and Earl traveled globally, Sharon taught in England for a year, traveling all over Europe and returning with many friendships. Earl’s work took them to China, Brazil, and Mexico. The Alaskan and Panama Canal cruises were favorite vacations. They also took annual six-week time-share vacations in different regions of the U.S. These vacations were scheduled between down-hill skiing and water-skiing seasons! After Earl’s passing in 2016, Sharon spent weeks in New Zealand with nephew, Rick Aho’s family, in Norway with daughter, Katy, and her husband, Wayne, and her brother, Tim and his wife, Laurie, meeting relatives still living on the original “Torp” family homestead. She even went on a church mission trip and hunted that year.

Sharon Rae Thorp, Munson, Dierks was an amazing woman full of smiles. Active in Red Hats, Bridge club, book groups and with Presbyterian women’s retreats, and she grew beautiful flowers. Sharon enjoyed life to the fullest, played hard, loved deeply, and gave to, and received much from, the community of Buffalo for many happy years! Best of all, she loved each one of us.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ray and Emma Thorp; husband, Gene Munson; husband, Earl Dierks; son, James Brian Munson; sister, Diane; and Diane’s husband, Bob Hudgins.

Sharon is survived by siblings, Randy (Diane)Thorp, Ron (Jeannie)Thorp, and Tim (Laurie). Her loving children, Jane Robin, of Williams, Oregon, David (Janelle) Munson, of New Ulm, MN, Katy (Wayne) Bauernschmitt, of Maple Lake, MN; stepchildren, Dennis (Nancy) Dierks, of Brooklyn Park, MN, Sheryl (Wes) Johnson, of Ham Lake, MN, Joel (Maria) Dierks, of Elk River, MN, Mark (Julie), of Norwood-Young America, MN; grandchildren, Chris Dierks, Rachael Dierks, Elizabeth Dierks, Kati (Chris) Schoenbauer, Ben Johnson, Adam (Kimberly) Dierks, Scott Dierks, Joshua (Bryan Helminiak) Dierks, Aaron (Anna) Dierks, Andrew (Louise) Dierks, Schuyler (Nichelle) Ashton, Ryan Ashton, Evan (Brittney) Bauernschmitt, Bryce (Katelyn) Bauernschmitt, Emmy Munson, Elsie Munson, Brandt Munson; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, October 30, 2021, at 11:00 AM with visitation starting at 9:00 AM at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Buffalo, MN (302 Second St. NE). The service will be livestreamed for those who cannot attend by visiting the church Youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/c/StJohnsBuffalo. Gerald Erickson, 86

Gerald (Jerry) Dennis Erickson, son of Carl Erick Erickson and Ruth Ericka Johanna (Isaacson) Erickson, was born April 13, 1935, in Lamoure County, North Dakota; passed away September 13, 2021, in Three Rivers, Texas.

Jerry attended the public schools in Nortonville, ND and was a graduate of North Dakota State University in 1958 with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE) Fraternity. Jerry had five sisters, Patricia, Natalie, Carla, Jacqueline, and Darlene.

Jerry was a typical boy growing up in rural America with his Shetland ponies (Betsy and Lightning) and multiple dogs. He would ride Betsy everywhere often falling asleep on the pony, and Betsy would simply take him home. Jerry was a builder at a young age; buying bags of nails just to pound them into anything he could find; often the family porch. He would weld together pieces of farm equipment and built 4-wheel drive motorized garden tractors around 1949, long before the Bobcat (which was invented in Gwinner, ND in 1958 less than 100 miles away). He would drive it down their highway 281, which was on the way to Gwinner; so, the family always wondered…

Jerry was united in Holy Matrimony to Patricia Jean Rindahl on December 28, 1958. The union was blessed with five children (Brian, Steve, Michelle, Wade and Kristi), 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He also brought in cousin Paul Isaacson to live for several years and become part of the family. During their 61 years of marriage, they lived in over 20 locations across the United States. Jerry worked for Boeing out of college until 1967, working on various programs, including the Gemini Space program and refurbishing the Minuteman Missile silos as the Lead Engineer, which moved the family to 12 locations in seven years. In 1967, he joined Honeywell living in Minnetonka, MN with a move to Joliet, IL in 1984 until his retirement in the early 1990s. After retirement, he returned to Minnesota living mostly in Buffalo, then in 2005 moved to Sun City West, AZ to sell real estate, and then in 2021 moved to Three Rivers, Texas to live with daughters Kristi and Michelle after the passing of Patricia. Both Jerry and Patricia succumbed to the COVID-19 virus 13 months apart.

Jerry and Patricia will be remembered for their generosity, church life, sports and Boy Scouts during the children’s youth. Honesty, Trust and Good Citizenship were impressed upon the children throughout life, and they led by example. Both believed strongly in higher education and supported their children through all their achievements. Jerry lived well, impacted many, and will be missed.

Bryce Russell, 42

Bryce James Russell, age 42, of Montrose, Minnesota, passed away unexpectedly on September 23, 2021. Bryce was born and raised in Buffalo and graduated from Buffalo High School in 1997.

Family and friends remember Bryce as a man of infinite smiles, who touched the hearts of many. Notoriously known as a “wild child,” Bryce lived life at full throttle from a very young age and continued into adulthood. He worked extremely hard; he played just as hard. Bryce enjoyed hockey, fishing, hunting, camping, and spending time with family and friends. While some people collect material things, Bryce collected friends that he made easily and kept throughout his life. Bryce loved abundantly and was loved equally.

Bryce was a wonderful father, husband, son, brother, and friend.

Bryce leaves behind his loving wife, Jennifer; sons, Hunter (15), Logan (14), Kaden (8) and Colton (6); and two stepchildren, Emelia (16), and Brodie (15); his parents, Jim and Jana Russell; brother, Jesse (Marissa) Russell; sister, Chelsie (Pete) Hayes; and grandparents, Don and Gerrie Huston, as well as numerous relatives and friends.

Bryce was a man who would give you the shirt off his back, and hand it humbly off with an infectious smile. He was the sole provider of his family. Any donations would be tremendously appreciated. Visit the gofundme site and search Bryce Russell Family Fund, if you would like to help support Bryce’s family.

Memorial service for Bryce will be held Thursday, October 7, 2021, at 6:00 P.M., with visitation starting at 4:00 P.M. at Zion Lutheran Church, 1200 MN-25, in Buffalo. Reception to follow at the church.

Riding his motorcycle year-round was something he didn’t just say he did, he did. He was a storyteller and loved to spin a story to rapt attention. He was known to light up a room when he entered. Another facet of Tim was that he was an accomplished martial artist. All of these interests went to the back of the line with the arrival of his grandchildren. Spending time with the grandchildren even trumped riding his beloved motorcycle.
